Harness the Power of Feedback in Distributed Teams

Trust and transparency are pivotal in a remote-first organization. Effective feedback is one of the most impactful ways to foster these values. As HR leaders and distributed team managers, here's what you can do:

🥇 Prioritize Feedback from Day One: Introduce new team members to the culture of candid feedback during their onboarding. Use resources like Kim Scott's "Radical Candor" to underscore its significance.

🌱 Train and Lead: Ensure leaders aren't just providing feedback, but are also models of how to give, receive, and request it.

📚 Institutionalize Feedback: Make feedback a regular practice, not a one-time event. Employ tools like After Action Reviews and quarterly 360 feedback sessions, ensuring they're transparent and inclusive.

💪 Overcome Communication Barriers: In a remote setting, where non-verbal cues might be missed and cross-cultural nuances exist, it's even more crucial to practice and refine your feedback skills.

→ Remember, feedback is not just about growth—it's about creating a sense of belonging and care in a distributed team.

Scott Farquhar, CEO Atlassian

Despite many tech founders calling their employees back to the office Scott Farquhar, CEO of Atlassian, doesn’t care for the whole return-to-office trend. Most of his employees work remotely and he doesn’t see any problem in that.

Farquhar hasn’t noticed any harm to productivity or company culture as a result of hybrid working and told 60 Minutes: “Their work is a vocation, not a location, and so we expect people to be able to work from home, from a cafe, from an office, but we don’t really care where they do their work—what we care about is the output that they produce”.
